Diamond Resorts International® first began working with Florida Hospital for Children (FHFC) in 2012 through volunteer participation at hospital events. As the hospitality company’s presence expanded in Central Florida, Diamond Resorts decided to increase their involvement and give back more in order to make a significant impact and help the children’s hospital in its vital, life-saving mission.
In 2013, Diamond Resorts Ambassador and PGA Touring Professional, Brian Gay, offered to lend his name to the Diamond Resorts inaugural golf invitational in efforts to help raise money for the Orlando-based hospital. Hosting more than 300 attendees, golfers and celebrities, the Brian Gay Invitational included a private golf clinic with both Brian Gay and his personal instructor Joe Mayo, followed by a best ball team competition where foursomes were paired with a celebrity for the day. The winning team featured retired PGA Tour player, Carl Paulson, Robert Foster, Mike Merchent and his 12-year-old son, Clay, defeating two-time U.S. Open winner, Lee Janzen’s team in a three-hole playoff.
One of the highlights of the weekend was a live, private concert on Saturday evening on the Mystic Dunes driving range featuring the country music superstar, Darius Rucker and several of his band mates from Hootie and the Blowfish. The concert concluded with Brian and Kimberly Gay joining Darius Rucker on stage for his chart-topping hit, Wagon Wheel.
The Brian Gay Invitational continued on Sunday with a celebrity-only golf tournament with a $40,000 purse. The winner of the Professional Golf Division was PGA touring professional, Nick O’Hern and the Celebrity Champion was retired NFL player and Super Bowl XXVI MVP, Mark Rypien.
The three day weekend event at Mystic Dunes Resort & Golf Club in Celebration, Florida garnered national media attention and raised $410,000 in net proceeds to benefit FHFC.
Returning for its second year, in 2014, Diamond Resorts International® expanded the tournament into a larger, more up-scale event. The world-class event began on Thursday, December 11, at Isleworth Country Club. After a day of golf, country music artist Colt Ford entertained guests in a private acoustic show. With more than 400 attendees, golfers and celebrities participating in the event, the weekend included a celebrity/amateur golf tournament where more than 90% of the 2013 celebrity participants returned to compete including Hall of Fame athletes Reggie Jackson, John Smoltz, Marcus Allen and Richard Dent. Joining the celebrity roster for the first time were accomplished stars Roger Clemens, Gaylord Perry and Eric Dickerson. Saturday’s winning foursome came from guests of Dick’s Sporting Goods and featured Ryan Longwell, the all-time leading scorer in Green Bay Packers history.
Saturday evening’s gala dinner featured family-style southern cuisine prepared by celebrity chef and humanitarian, Art Smith. A memorable live auction featured many unique experiences, many of which were introduced by celebrities including Mark Rypien, Roger Clemens and 2004 World Champion Red Sox players, Tim Wakefield and Kevin Millar. Participants were then treated to an exclusive concert by one of country music's hottest performers, Chris Young, who entertained the crowd on the Mystic Dunes driving range with several of his chart-topping hits including "Aw Naw," "Who I Am With You," and "Lonely Eyes."
As a company dedicated to the understanding that taking vacations is vital to people's health, happiness and relationships with their loved ones, Diamond Resorts ensured that all attendees and their families were able to experience a much deserved vacation and create memories that would last a lifetime. With this in mind, non-golfers and families were invited to spend the day at one of Orlando's theme parks or enjoy a luncheon and cooking discussion with Chef Smith.
The culmination of the weekend’s events was the Diamond Resorts Celebrity Invitational, a celebrity-only golf tournament on Sunday, December 14. The winner of the PGA Tour Division, shooting a 9-under 63, was JB Holmes, the winner of the 2014 Wells Fargo Championship. The Celebrity Champion, shooting a 74, was legendary Atlanta Braves pitcher John Smoltz defeating the current Braves President of Baseball Operations John Hart in a one-hole playoff.
In just two short years, the Brian Gay Invitational presented by Diamond Resorts International® has quickly evolved into a world-class event hosting more than 400 attendees including an all-star cast of celebrities, musicians and professional athletes. In 2013 and 2014 combined, the best in class celebrity/amateur golf tournament has raised $1.2 million for The Walt Disney Pavilion at Florida Hospital for Children.
Continuing on its success, the Diamond Resorts sponsored golf event returned in 2016 as the Diamond Resorts Invitational benefiting Florida Hospital for Children and was a live, nationally televised event on Golf Channel. The 54-hole celebrity tournament had a Stableford scoring format with a $500,000 purse and featured a world-class weekend of golf, entertainment and philanthropy, all to benefit Florida Hospital for Children.
